Don't talk to her;
Stay away from that blonde okay hun?
16th Street had changed and for Courtney it was a drastic one. From a people lover to a misanthrope, smiles to terrible losses, love to hatred and from a famous fortune-teller to a ruffian.
For everyone else but her Monday mornings seemed to be an abuse and the fact that she awaited the Mondays' meeting with numerous people. Smiles, charm and intelligence were the qualities that people admired in her. She loved being a sibyl and was probably one in millions gifted with that ability to predict the truth in the fortunes. For her it was a passion that turned out to be a bread-winning mode.
It was just another Monday for her, happy as ever she boarded the 07:15 rail; reached the shop and set up the board, crystal, dices and the blinks. She was all set for the numerous encounters and patiently give away all the facts which were considered as stupid fallacies if went wrong. The city had its belief in Courtney and her fortune predictions. To some her predictions had changed people's lives and few took it as crap but she loved everyone equally and never gave a bad signal.
Like every other Monday morning Josh came earlier than else and greeted her for the day.
'How come you always end up before everyone else?'
'Aah!! I just miss you over the weekend. So what do we have for the week? How does everything look?'
Courtney played with her deck
'Looks like a hazy week ahead, be careful while driving and wooden equipments at the unit. And remember you manager loves you!'
Josh was the shift supervisor at a distribution packaging company.
'Well well, He's the boss; I'll be careful don't worry. Thanks'
Moments after Josh left for work, Casey reached the place and chattered her personal problems.
'Don't worry, I'll see what's happening here. Aha, looks like the week is good for you, tensions would be growing with you and your husband but keep it calm and let the tide pass-by.'
While she was leaving in slight disappointment, Courtney shouted 'Watch out for glass Casey.'
Rob followed Casey as he commented, 'She left in disappointment, what did you do to her? Don't disappoint me today. It's time for some serious gamble now.' Rob was a professional gambler and he engaged in everything to avoid loses. He trusted Courtney on her predictions and exposed himself to risks accordingly.
'Luck will favor you greatly but if you lose control, you might make things worse.'
'Nothing new for me, I like living on the edge. See you next week.'
And next was Carlos, a happy-go-lucky family man working as a technician at an energy firm.
'It's good to see you Carlos'
'Same here Courtney. So give me something good for the week. It's my kids birthday today.'
'How very beautiful, wells looks like a joyful weeks for you. Don't drink too much and drive safe.'
Courtney kept herself busy for the rest of the day answering questions patiently to everyone. On her way back home, she saw the paramedics moving fast and had to detour a long route. Turning on the radio for the city news she realized a person named Josh Cuber died in an accident at the Woodridge Packaging Company. By the time she reached home and saw the incident on TV, her mind knew it was her prediction that wasn't followed. As she heard it,
'Josh Cuber died in an accident at the Woodridge unit. While he was in the field orienting a trainee for the job, the wooden cajone fell off the anchor.'
Her prediction was true and she was upset with the fact that she couldn't save him even while directing him the danger. The week passed on and another Monday morning and Josh wasn't the first one at the door. While she finished her day easily, next day's news shocked her. The city news read
'Savio Giles was taken into custody by local police for killing his wife Casey Giles. The incident happened yesterday when drunk Savio assaulted Casey and blasted a bottle of wine on her head.'
Courtney couldn't read further because she had warned Casey for the glass. Something wasn't going good and she was dwelling from within. She tried to call Rob and found out he was still gambling his life further. Just another week passed and the Monday morning as she was driving to work, she passed by the casino to see if things were going good with Rob. She was late. The moment she sighted a paramedics van, she knew Rob would have counted the last bead. As per the paramedics, Rob tried his hand at Grand Hazard Dice Game and was losing miserably. He had ruled the game of cards but couldn't bear the fact of losing a million on the table. His heart choked to death. His soul vanished in minutes.
Something wasn't going right. Josh, then Casey and now Rob. It was the same order that followed 2 weeks back at her shop. Her senses worked and she drove to the city police department. She tried to explain but was merely understood by people. Humiliated and dejected as she left the police department, she checked her log book and contacted Carlos. She knew he was next and she had 6days to save him. She contacted him and after informing the entire fact, she warned him not to get wasted and stay careful because that was the only thing she could do.
To her misfortune Monday morning Carlos died while fixing the circuit breaker. He wasn't insulated enough to resist the power that took his life. Courtney was paranoid by the fact that people who came to her on the Monday were getting killed by a pattern. She tried talking to everyone in the police department and for four consecutive deaths they took it seriously. They took the next person in secured custody and waited for the Monday. Nothing happened! Monday passed by and Courtney was a joke. News flashed with blonde jokes and she was no sooner a stupid blonde who tried to attain fame for her fortune-telling. She locked herself in the shop and tried to avoid every contact with the people. Courtney was a lame, idiotic person for everyone around and they feared passing by her if she would predict anyone's death.
Courtney stood delusional in her shop. Something still wasn't right and couldn't go by her senses. She tried to recollect every possible thing happened five Mondays back. Morning rail... Starbucks... Shop... Board... Crystal... Dice... Lights... and then Josh entered. She tried to recollect every incident and tried to join the pieces. She couldn't stop feeling strange about the fact that something wasn't going right.
Nervous she took coffee on the table tried to rush her adrenaline. As she moved the coffee mug she saw the sign of Woodridge distribution company. For some reason, it was related to her and everything was. She set up the board from Woodridge distribution company, she set up her crystal and warned Casey to stay away from glass, She picked the dices and kept her place the same reason for Rob to die of heart attack and then the lights which were from same company where Carlos died. Board... Crystal... Dice... Lights... She had gotten the pattern and she knew why everything happened but what was next, would the pattern stop? Who would be the next in line? Was it someone else? Did she warn anyone else? Too many thoughts confused her and she was going crazy and wanted to smack the people with truth. As she moved the coffee slipped her hand and the mug fell off the board splashing the hot fluid on her. Her skin burnt and she jumped off the chair hitting the board and the crystal fell off. She rubbed her skin and removed her shoes to wipe the feet. After a bruise she leaned to lift the wet crystal but before she could touch the crystal, she kept her feet on the spilled coffee which had reached the power terminals. She was hit by the power shock, lost her control, banged her head on the table to a sudden death.
Courtney was next! Board... Crystal... Dice.. Lights.. and Courtney, that was how the Monday morning had started and ended eventually. She couldn't avert death and save her soul. Her belief and sense stopped when it came to self. And that is how the fortune tellers bill it to themselves. For them it's the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief and once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen.
